Cox & Kings has been arranging other people’s journeys since 1758

Cox & Kings was founded in London in 1758, which makes it older than the United States, the steam locomotive and the word tourist. It began by handling the pay and supplies of British regiments abroad, and the company’s own history notes that it went on to serve Gandhi and Churchill. Two hundred and sixty-eight years later it is still doing a version of the same job: getting a particular person to a particular place with the arrangements already made.

Who owns the name now

This matters, and it is worth stating plainly before anything else. The Indian company Cox & Kings Ltd went into liquidation after its 2019 default. The British business, together with the rights to the brand everywhere outside India, was acquired that same year by Abercrombie & Kent, and A&K has operated it since.

The brand a traveller books today is therefore the London operation inside one of the larger names in guided travel. That is the reason the 2026/27 programme reads more confidently than a 265-year-old company emerging from an ownership change might be expected to: it has A&K’s ground network behind it.

Two ways to buy the same expertise

The catalogue splits cleanly. Small group tours run to a fixed date with a set itinerary and an escort. Tailormade journeys let a traveller, in the company’s phrasing, “choose your own mix of experiences, countries, itineraries and places”, with a consultant assembling the route around what the client actually wants.

The tailor-made half is where the company puts its weight, and the promise attached to it is specific. Cox & Kings says that “a real, well-informed person is online, on the phone and on the ground, at home and in your destination, around the clock”, backed by offices and partners in more than 100 countries with local guides and 24-hour assistance.

What that means in practice is a named consultant who holds the file. The person who writes the itinerary is the person who answers when the internal flight in Rajasthan moves by four hours, and that continuity is most of what the price buys.

The 2026/27 collection turns west

The current programme adds more than 50 tailor-made itineraries, weighted towards Canada and the United States. Nineteen of them are built around Canada alone, and the reason given is unusually direct: clients voted Canada the number one destination they wanted the operator to offer, and the company built the itineraries in response.

The scale of the thing is set by an example. The 14-day “Wild Wonders of British Columbia” starts from £7,815 per person, international flights included. That is a figure to hold onto, because it locates the company on the map: this is the price of a route where the transfers, the guides, the lodges and the internal flights are arranged by someone else and confirmed before departure.

Recognition has followed the shift. The company took Best Small Travel Company in Arts & Culture at the 2025 British Travel Awards, a category that fits its centre of gravity better than a general one would.

Where the company sits, and our score

Our score is 3.5 out of 5, and it needs its basis stated, because on this page the number measures reach rather than quality. Cox & Kings has the narrowest catalogue of the eight operators reviewed here and the most personal service. Those two facts are the same fact.

The company is built for the traveller who arrives with a question rather than a search query: three weeks, India and Sri Lanka, second half of February, two people, one of whom will not do early starts. That question has an answer, and producing it takes a person rather than a filter. Somebody who wants a room in Lisbon for tomorrow night is asking something a website answers in nine seconds, and for that people open Booking.com.

The small group tours occupy the same territory from the other side. They run with an escort and a set itinerary aimed at cultural and historical routes, and they sit at a higher price and a higher comfort level than the adventure operators. Weighing a fixed departure at twelve people with a local leader against a Cox & Kings escorted tour is really a choice between two philosophies of the same fortnight, and Intrepid is the other half of that comparison.

One last practical note. Because the tailor-made side is quoted rather than listed, the useful first move is a phone call or the enquiry form with dates and a rough budget attached, not a browse. The published itineraries are starting points that the consultant expects to change, and treating them as fixed products understates what the company does.

Ownership and the 2026/27 collection checked in September 2026.
